Bangor, Maine – Forbidden Hollywood is a show that does musical parodies of famous movies. It is coming to the Gracie Theatre on March 26.
Jeri Misler, Managing Director of The Gracie Theatre, describes Forbidden Hollywood as a show that provides skits and songs in relation to well-known movies. “This is a touring of a Broadway show. They do musical parodies of popular movies, like Titanic, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the rings. There are four people who do about 96 characters,” Misler said. “We had the sister-show here a few years earlier, Forbidden Broadway. It is the same touring company and the same writers. It was really funny and well-received.”
In comparison to the Forbidden Broadway show, Misler believes that people will have more knowledge of the parodies presented in Forbidden Hollywood. “I think that people from this are not as exposed to Brodway shows. The jokes are probably going to hit home a little better with the movie parody. Here, people will most likely have heard a lot about the big hits that the show make fun of,” Misler said.
With that in mind, Misler thinks that this show would be enticing for a lot of people. “For people who like sketch comedy, like you might see on Saturday Night Live, this is just a great way to laugh,” Misler said. “It is also on a holiday weekend for some people, since the show takes place on the Saturday before Easter. So I thought that it would be a fun thing to do for people who are looking for something special over the weekend.”
Misler also thinks that the show would be fun to watch for college students. “I think for students, it is hilarious to see a movie parody of films that they love. To see someone poking fun at that, in a very smart way. It is fun to laugh at things you know really well,” Misler said.
To make sure people know that the Forbidden Hollywood event is happening, the Gracie has done a lot of things to advertise it. “We have a media plan that is in place. We are going to be doing commercials on television, for channel 2 and channel 5,” Misler said. “We are also going to start to run ads on the Bangor Daily News and on social media. Starting this, or maybe next, week, we will start to run Facebook ads as well. We will also advertise it through radio.”
As of February 29, the Gracie Theatre had sold 125 tickets for the Forbidden Hollywood show. Misler strongly believes that these numbers will increase during the upcoming weeks. “These number come before we have done our big media push. We have not really advertised the event that much yet, so the number will increase when we do so. Also, people in Bangor tend to buy tickets late for these kinds of shows, so I am not that worried,” Misler said.
