The ongoing Husson University Spring Week is nearing its close. Spring week is an annual weeklong event at Husson that is organized by the Husson Universities Student Activities department. Spring week offers an opportunity for all students to get involved in their campus community, and have fun in the process. There are even prizes and souvenirs available at some events. There is nothing better than that, right?
Husson’s Student Activities director, Sterling Pingree, is the mastermind behind the extravaganza that is Spring Week. Pingree strives to provide excitement and entertainment for students all year, and tries to provide a way for everyone to keep busy during Spring Week. Of course, this means that Pingree is very busy as well.
“Not to sound corny, but I’m doing this for the students,” said Pingree, “Sometimes I look at the calendar and say ‘who decided I’ll have no life?’ then I realize, that it’s all my fault, I am the boss.”
The hard work of the Student Activities staff does not go unnoticed. Husson student Will Collins says that Spring Week is nothing out of the ordinary for the Husson community.
“Spring Week is not much different than the rest of the year at Husson, and I mean that in a good way,” said Collins, “It feels like there is always something to do here. If you are willing to get out of your room and participate in what’s offered, you can have a lot of fun here.”
Spring Week activities began on Monday with the Spring Week Food Drive in the Student Center. All donations of nonperishable food were accepted. A donation of 3 nonperishable food items earned students a Star Wars themed Spring Week t-shirt. The first day was concluded by Chris Hoback’s presentation, “Terms & conditions May Apply”, in the Kominsky Auditorium. The presentation was based on Hoback’s 2013 documentary and was about how user-service agreements collect and use data.
Tuesday started early, with the release of tickets for the Portland Sea Dogs trip. The game is at 1 P.M. on Saturday, April 30. Tickets are only five dollars and includes a skybox seat, transportation to and from Portland, and food. Sounds like a bargain to me. The action continued later Tuesday night when comedian Chris James performed at the Furman center. Students in attendance were given a free vintage Husson t-shirt, and plenty of good laughs. Wednesday night belonged to magician Derek Hughes, who also performed in front of students at the Furman center.
Students got a chance to put their Star Wars themed Spring Week shirts to use on Thursday night at the showing of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at the Gracie Theatre. Collins says that this was his favorite event of the week.
“Everything else was cool, but Star Wars is awesome so it was cool to watch that at the Gracie,” said Collins.
It’s been an exciting week so far, but it is not over yet. Friday night’s event is a showing of the movie “Daddy’s Home” at the Kominsky Auditorium. Spring Week will come to an end on Saturday night after a game of Name That Tune in the Furman Center. Teams of four can participate, and gift cards will be awarded to winners. Once again, Spring Week has not disappointed. If you have not had a chance to enjoy it thus far, make sure to catch one of this weekends events.
