PORTLAND, Maine – Calls for domestic violence and assaults are coming into the Portland Police Department multiple times per day. According to the department’s daily media log on the City’s website, Portland police officers responded to four assault related calls and three domestic dispute calls all on Sunday February 24th. The seven separate incidents do not appear to be related, but the frequency of familial disturbances in Maine’s largest city is causing some to raise concerns. Police received the day’s first domestic dispute call at 2:50 a.m. Sunday. Officer John Nelson responded to the issue at 238 Auburn St. Another call relating to an assault came in at 7:09 a.m. and was answered by Officer Matthew Burnell at 190 Valley St. Officer David Moore reported to 63 Frederic St. at 2:23 p.m. for another assault call. Portland is not known for a high rate of domestic incidents, but the recent uptick in 911 calls for home-related disturbances is becoming a trend. This pattern may give local and state officials reason to keep a close watch on the social welfare of residents in Maine’s port city.
