BANGOR, Maine- It will be another busy week for the Husson Eagles as basketball takes on the NCAA Tournament while men’s and women’s lacrosse hopes to kick off their season.
Thursday, February 28th
Husson Men’s Lacrosse at Saint Joseph’s (Maine) at Standish, Maine at 4 p.m.
The Men’s Lacrosse team will open up the season vs. the Monks for the second straight season. The Eagles lost their season opener, last year, 10-8 to the Monks at Boucher Field. This year the Eagles are a new looked team that came off a NAC semifinal loss last season to Castleton. With both New England and Castleton, who competed in the NAC finals, leaving the conference; that leaves the Eagles as the odds on favorite to win the conference.
Friday, March 1st
Husson Men’s Basketball at #19 Williams at Williamstown, Mass at 7 p.m.
Husson Women’s Basketball at #6 Amherst at Amherst, Mass. at 7:30 p.m.
Both Husson basketball programs are going dancing this season after winning the NAC championship in the last weekend of February. Seniors, Justin Martin and Kenzie Worcester, both led the charge as they was named All-Tournament MVP and now the seniors will look to play another game and cause an upset which won’t be an easy challenge.
The men’s team will face Williams who is ranked 19th in the country and 4th in the New England region with a 20-6 record. The Ephs played four common opponents as the Eagles and went 3-1 while the Eagles went 2-2. The Ephs defeated Colby while the Eagles lost to the Mules on a buzzer beat. Both teams lost to Bowdoin and defeated Bates and Fitchburg State.
The women’s team will face the defending champions, Amherst. The Mammoths are ranked 6th in the country and 3rd in the country with a 23-3 record. There are three common opponents between the two schools as the Eagles went 2-3 while the Mammoths went 2-1. The reason why the Eagles finished with a five-game record was that they played Maine Maritime three times as they defeated the Mariners twice including the NAC Championship game and lost to the school once in Castine. Amherst defeated Bates and Colby while the Eagles lost to the Bobcats then lost to the Mules in triple-overtime. Both schools lost to Bowdoin, who was undefeated until the NESCAC Championship game.
Saturday, March 2nd
Husson Women’s Lacrosse vs. Saint Joseph’s (Maine) at 12 p.m. at Boucher Field
The new look women’s lacrosse team is supposed to open up the season vs. the Monks but as of the time of posting this; it doesn’t look likely that it will happen at noontime at Boucher Field. Due to recent weather, Boucher Field is more of the Boucher Ice Arena which would be great for the Husson Eagles hockey team…..if there was such thing. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear in the next day or two that this game gets moved to the Monks or played at a different time. The decision all depends on the two coaches. Make sure to follow @HussonUEagles for the latest on the decision of the game.
If either Husson basketball teams pull off the upset victory on Friday when they will play on Saturday as well and there should be no field condition causing the game not to be played.
Sunday, March 3rd
Husson Men’s Lacrosse vs. Southern Maine at 1 p.m. at Boucher Field
So yeah, one day ain’t going to change much for the field. More than likely this game will also get moved.
Tuesday, March 5th
Men’s Lacrosse at UMass-Boston at 4 p.m. in Boston, Mass.
The Eagles will look to avenge a 21-3 loss to the Beacons, last season. The Beacons finished last season with an 8-9 record as they were defeated in the Little East Conference Quarterfinals. UMass-Boston defeated New England College, 13-11, last season and lost to Southern Maine, 17-14, in the only common opponents from last season. The Eagles were defeated in both games to NEC and USM.
Wednesday, March 6th
Women’s Lacrosse at Southern Maine at 4 p.m. in Gorham, Maine.
The Eagles will look to avenge an 18-5 loss to the Huskies, last season, at home. Huskies finished last season with a 9-8 record but lost in the first round of the LEC tournament. The biggest common opponents between the two schools were New England College and Castleton as the Eagles lost to both while the Huskies beat both.
