Student Government Executive Board Elections on the Horizon

By Patrick Caldwell

BANGOR, Maine – As the Spring semester comes to a close at Husson University, a new election will take place to determine who will sit on the Student Government Executive Board for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Student Government Executive Board consists of six student positions, which include the President, Executive Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President of Residence Life and Vice President of Commuter Affairs.

To run for either President or Executive Vice President, a student must have at least one year of Student Senate experience in addition to the other requirements outlined in the Student Government Constitution. Students require no Senate experience to run for the other four positions on the Executive Board.

The Executive Board is responsible for governing and guiding clubs at Husson University as well as keeping track of their budgets and rosters. The Executive Board also supervises Student Senate and helps Senators with projects they may embark on, which thus far have including things like making Husson a non-smoking campus, advocating for extra lights in dark areas of campus at night, and adding printers in the main lobbies of residence halls for the convenience of students living there.

“Student Government offers students the opportunity to act in leadership roles,” said Dr. David Haus, Director of Online and Extended Learning at Husson as well as an Advisor to Student Government, “Perhaps the best aspect of Student Government is that it encourages a marketplace of ideas.”

Petitions to run for an Executive Board position are due no later than Friday, April 5th at 4:00 P.M. Petitions will be turned in to the Student Life office. Once petitions are vetted by the Student Life office (to confirm the prospective candidate has a satisfactory GPA), candidates will be placed on the ballot.

Voting will take place Tuesday, April 16th and Wednesday, April 17th in the Campus Center as well as the Dickerman Dining Center. Any student at Husson University will be able to vote as long as they provide a Husson I.D.
