From eye-witness point of view.
BREWER, Maine – On Sunday, February 10th, a man claimed to be homeless walked into the Walmart with a Hannaford shopping cart. His cart was about half full when he came into the store and that alerted Walmart security.
About an hour later, the man tried to walk out of the store but was stopped by security and brought into a little tiny office where Brewer PD met the man.
The man was asked for the basic information as the PD tried to ID the man and while the police struggled to accomplish that, but the police were able to figure out who the man was.
The man was asked if he was out on bail and the man responded, “no.”
The police then asked if the man was recently arrested and the man said, “yes.”
The police asked him how he was released from jail and the man said, “out on bail.”
The police then said, “so you are out on bail?” The guy responded with, “oh, I guess I am.”
The suspect then asked if he was being arrested and the cops responded with, “yes.”
The police then proceed to look through the non-Walmart stuff in the cart and one of the officers pulls a big bottle of liquor out of his duffel bags.
One of the officers asked the suspect if he paid for the bottle at Hannaford and the guy said, “believe it or not I did pay for it.”
The officer asked if he paid for the bottle in cash or card and the suspect said, “cash.”
“So the video cameras in the store will show that you pay for the bottle?” asked the officer.
“Well, I don’t know if the cameras will show me paying for it but I paid for it,” said the suspect.
The officers took off to Hannaford to watch the video.
The man was charged with three counts of theft including a count from Walmart, Hannaford, and Walgreens.
The red Hannaford shopping cart was returned to Hannaford, the next morning, between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m
