School Year Review

Husson University End of the year

By: Shane Althouse

Well it is coming to that point in the semester here at Husson University 3 weeks left of classes and most importantly three weeks left for seniors that will be graduating this year. Also with this comes the freshmen’s first experience at college and for everyone else one step closer to graduating. It also is coming to that point in the year where there should be no more snow and sports teams are getting close to wrapping up their season and possibly heading to the playoffs.

Husson University freshmen student Physical Therapy major Leah Desjardins is from Poland, Maine not to be confused from the country Poland. Leah talks about her first year at Husson University, “Decent, I wasn’t prepared for the amount of studying that I had to do for my major, and I guess my first year was kind of a learning experience for good studying habits”. Along with her major Leah did track and field this year and has thrived at it. Setting records and getting rookie of the week and also already qualifying for New England’s . Leah also talked about her balancing act of school, sports and social life, “I had to cut down on social activities to make time from school work”. To be able to continue the Physical Therapy major you need to have a 3.5 GPA which in the end means not much of a social life. “I chose to go to Husson University because they had one of the best Physical Therapy programs, and because it was relatively cheap and also not that bad of a distance from home”. Leah will be entering her sophomore year of college next year.

Another freshmen student at Husson University is Physical Therapy major Alex Charette is not far from Husson University he lives in Hampden, Maine. Alex who talks about his experience here at Husson University, “I’ve enjoyed it so far, classes are a lot harder than in high school, but living here and having the extra freedom is amazing. Alex also talked about what it’s like trying to have a social life with track and field and being a Physical Therapy major also, “Well I do homework after track and track for the most part is my social life other than my girlfriend”. Alex is a jumper here at Husson University and qualified for New England’s while they were in California for their first meet. I saw it as more of freedom than anthing but then saw it as a opportunity.

First year student here at Husson University Bekah Walker is from Caribou, Maine she also is a transfer student from Northern Maine Community College. Bekah Walker is a video production major here at Husson University and is a junior with all of the credits from here other college. She talks about going to a different college, “Transferring from a community college to a university is definitely different. It’s a lot bigger than a community college, I was shy at first, but became less shy. I felt a little bit like a freshman but not really”. What made Bekah feel like a freshman was just being at a new school and with a new major. Before Bekah came to Husson University and enrolled in the Video Production major she got an associate’s degree in liberal studies while at Northern Maine Community College. Bekah will be entering her 2nd to final year here at Husson University.

Another Freshmen that I had time to talk to was criminal justice major Chad Prince who lives in Gardiner, Maine. Chad Prince is a freshman that has made the transition to college well so far this year. Chad Prince joined the golf team right away when he got to Husson. Chad’s experience has been great so far he has explained it as, “I really like it a lot! I’ve met a lot of people so all in all I love it”. Chad found that the most enjoyable parts of his freshmen year was meeting new people and of course the day that everyone goes nuts over mac and cheese and chicken tenders day at lunch here at Husson University. Chad enjoys his major a lot, he enjoys learning about new laws in his law enforcement class.

Husson university student Jordan Verge is a sophomore hear at Husson that majors in communication with a concentration in Radio Broadcasting. He also lives in Brewer, Maine. Jordan from his experience last year feels more acclimated and he also feels more comfortable and at home this year more than he did last year. With Jordan and his academics comes the fact that his parents work here at Husson, Jordan commented on how he feels with his parents working at Husson, “ My parents working here doesn’t really put any pressure on me,  but knowing that they’re working to put me through college, makes me want to do good academically”. While dealing with academics Jordan loves the part about being able to pursue his career and the friend he has made because he knows they will be long term friends.

Nikayala Abruzzese is a sophomore to be junior in about 3 weeks here at Husson University who is in the sports broadcasting/ sports journalism major. Nikayala Abruzzese lives in Maine.  Nikayla is a sports journalist major. Nikayla thought this school year was little bit easier. “ I had a better idea of what it was like”. Nikayala also found it fun to get to know many people and also get deeper into her field of study.

Kaci Rankins is a junior to be senior at Husson University and is a NESCOM major and has a minor in business administration. Kaci’s experience has been incredible, “ the relationships amd connection’s I’ve made here will last me a life time”. Kaci has a had a great experience here at Husson and has not had the time to think about the fact that he is graduating after this year due to being busy all the time. He also gets by the school year by having a very detailed schedule and putting reminders in his phone is the only way he can function. Without this his life would be a crazy mess. Being organized is an easy way to have a smooth and easy semester Kaci has been working at it very hard.

Kes Lavioe is a freshman here at Husson University she plays on the softball team as a 2nd baseman and a short stop she is also a marketing communication major. Kes has loved the experience here at Husson so far she says she loves it and has made so many great friends while getting involved in a lot of activities while saying, “Overall, Husson feels like home”. With Kes playing softball here at Husson freshmen must perform 6 hours of study hall every week for the first semester. Most of the students got to the Wadleigh Academic Center to work on homework during the week and to get their study hall hours done. Kes finds this as a way to get her homework done effectively.

Nolan Whitaker is a freshmen here at Husson University he is studying Audio Engineering here. Nolan lives in Winsdor, Conneticut. Nolan gave his input about how you can tell if they are trying on the food and said it is good. Like most non Mainer’s Nolan wished it was warmer but k knows that it is hard to come by here. Nolan also talked about his classes, “But I think overall my classes and everything I have done pretty well there has been nothing too bad. This is a tough one, people are friendly it is a friendly environment and I didn’t feel that at any other place I visited but here. And after I came here I still felt the same”.

To be able to be eligible to stay in the dorms is that you need to have around 9 to 12 credits to be able to stay on campus. It is recommended for freshmen to stay on campus their first year at Husson University but as long as you are within a 10-mile radius you are fine to live off campus. Also,  to be able to be eligible to participate in sports you need to have 12 credits or more and can become ineligible if you fail a class if you only take 12 credits. To be able to graduate from Husson University you need to have forty hours of community service. What defines something as community service is anything that is volunteer work that is not paid. For sports you get 10 hours.

Now to graduate you need to have 0ne-hundred and twenty credits from classes when you graduate and also have done your 40 hours of community service by the time you graduate.

With the school year only 2 weeks until it is over for most people. Some people have to stay on campus for sports. But good luck to everyone and have a good summer and finals week. To all that are returning next year good luck o he school year and hope it’s as good as your first year.
