Trooper killed on Interstate 95

By Bryan Sidelinger- A Maine State Trooper was killed Wednesday in a crash on interstate 95 in Hampden, according to Maine State Police.

According to Col. John Cote, 31-year-old Detective Ben Campbell had stopped to help a disabled vehicle when two tires came off a loaded logging truck that was passing by..

Cote said one of the tires hit Detective Campbell, who was outside his cruiser at the time.

Campbell died after being rushed to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m., just south of the Coldbrook Road overpass.

“This has been a tough day,” Cote said. “It’s been a tragic day for the Campbell family, with the loss of Detective Ben Campbell, and it’s been a tough day for our agency.”
