BANGOR, Maine–The White Gallery, located in the campus center at Husson University, is one of campus’ oft-overlooked locations.
Kathi Smith, who oversees and manages the small on-campus gallery, says she hopes to expand and generate more interest in art and the gallery with students of Husson. While the gallery is currently open only to artists from Maine, she says she is working to expand that restriction to include artists with ties to Maine.
One of the ways Smith has been getting students more involved is by displaying art made by Husson students taking Humanities courses in the White gallery at the end of each semester. These works can be found in the White Gallery at this time.
Smith also uses the White Gallery as a way to encourage learning about other subjects while using art as an educational tool. She talks about how in the past, she got an artist who specialized in scientific-based artistic works to raise awareness for water cleanliness.
Smith, who also teaches multiple art courses at Husson, says that while more space would be optimal, she is always looking for more ways to improve and expand on the White Gallery and its impact on the student body.
