Bangor, ME-Although Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, it hasn’t stopped Mother Nature from throwing some freezing cold and snow this way. If you’re looking for something to do that keeps you out of the cold, look no further than the Penobscot Theatre Company on Main Street in Bangor.
The theater has been around since 1973 when it was founded by George Vafiadis and Lou Collier. After ninety-seven productions and ten years the theater was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The theater grew and grew throughout its early years, and in 1997 the company acquired the Bangor Opera House where it still holds most of its operations. The Penobscot Theater Company is the only remaining theater company in Downtown Bangor. They have put on productions of “Peter Pan,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “A Christmas Carol,” and “Macbeth” among hundreds of others in the last ten years.
Tickets range from $25 to $37 per show, but they offer discounts to students, military families, educators, and senior citizens. The company, being a non-profit relies on sponsors, volunteers, and ticket sales to keep them going. Current sponsors include the Bangor Daily News, Darling’s Waterfront, and WLBZ Bangor. Volunteers can get involved with anything from administration, set design and construction, to publicity. Whatever skills you have, the Penobscot Theater can use your help!
Coming up in the new few months, the theater is putting on “The Last Five Years” from March 10th to the 27th, “Harriet the Spy” from March 18th to the 20th, and “Duck Hunter Shoots Angel” from April 28th to May 15th.
