Texas comedian Josh Johnson came to Husson University on Wednesday March 30 to perform at the Furman Center. He performed in front of a crowd of roughly 200 people, mostly students, for one hour.
Johnson has lived in many places in the United States. He has bounced around from Texas, Louisiana, Chicago, and now lives in New York. Johnson began his career around his home in Fort Worth Texas, and later around much of the northern parts of the state. His career has blossomed recently, after he released his first stand up comedy album, “Tabitha”, in October. He also appeared on last night’s episode of Adam Devine’s House Party. He recently opened up for comedian Janeane Garofalo in front of a sold out crowd in Dallas. Comedy Central has recognized Johnson as a “Comic to watch”.
Husson’s Director of Student Activities, Sterling Pingree, was a fan of Johnson as soon as he saw him perform at an annual 4 day conference in Hartford Connecticut. There were many acts performing at the conference, but Pingree believes that Johnson was a great talent and that Husson students would feel the same way.
“Josh was the best that I saw in those 4 days, hands down,” said Pingree.
Johnson started off by talking about some topics that were relatable to the crowd, like partying. He joked that most parties are only considered to be good parties if something bad happened at it.
Another topic that Johnson brought up was the Presidential election. He explained to the crowd why he thinks that Donald Trump running for President is a good thing.
“I’m kind of happy Trump is running,” said Johnson, “bare with me now. Because it makes me feel like I can run too.”
Johnson also touched on many things in his personal life. He talked about his recent move to New York, and how he was surprised to find out that the city was run by oversized rats and mean middle-schoolers. Johnson also often expressed his desire for a bigger body. He explained a few scenarios in which his 125 pound frame was not ideal when it came to physical altercations. His height continued to be a problem for him when he tried to play sports.
“I was more of a theatre kid than a football player,” said Johnson, “l thought needing height in basketball was just a rumor.”
Near the end of his performance, Johnson filled the audience in on his recent trip to Hawaii to be on Adam Devine’s House Party. He said the trip was the opportunity of a lifetime for him, but it was almost derailed by a few sketchy flights and a few uncomfortable nights of sharing a bed with three other comedians.
Husson student Caitlyn Smith was in attendance, and felt that Johnson’s humor appealed to people because it is relatable.
“He seemed to know how to entertain people our age. A lot of people probably relate to things he said,” said Smith
